Cipro Application

It is necessary to adhere to official recommendations on the proper use of antibacterial agents. Dosage regimen: the following daily doses are recommended if otherwise isn’t prescribed. Method of application. Ciprofloxacin coated pills should be swallowed without chewing and washed down with a small amount of liquid. Cipro coated pills can be taken regardless of food intake.

Taking the drug on an empty stomach accelerates the absorption of the active substance. In this case, ciprofloxacin coated pills should not be taken simultaneously with the use of dairy products or beverages enriched with minerals (milk, yogurt, orange juice enriched with calcium). However, the calcium contained in the diet does not significantly affect the absorption of ciprofloxacin.

When the disease is severe, or there are other reasons (for example, if the patient receives enteral nutrition) and it is impossible to take Cipro pills, it is recommended to switch to the injections of ciprofloxacin. After a course of injections, treatment can be continued using ciprofloxacin tablets.

Duration of Treatment

The duration of Cipro treatment depends on the severity of the disease, clinical course, and bacteriological profile. It is important to continue treatment for at least 3 days after the normalization of body temperature or the disappearance of clinical symptoms. The average duration of treatment is:

  • 1 day for acute uncomplicated gonorrhea and cystitis;
  • up to 7 days for infections of the kidneys, urinary tract and abdominal organs;
  • patients with reduced immunity carry out the treatment during the entire period of neutropenia;
  • if there is osteomyelitis, then the course of treatment can be up to 2 months;
  • 7-14 days for all other infections;
  • the total duration of treatment for the pulmonary form of anthrax (after contact) with ciprofloxacin (intravenous or oral) is 60 days.

Children. Ciprofloxacin can be used for children treatment as a second-and third-line drug for the treatment of complicated urinary tract infections and pyelonephritis caused by Escherichia coli (in clinical studies, the age of children treated was from 1 to 17 years), as well as for the treatment of pulmonary complications caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in children with cystic fibrosis (in clinical studies, the age of children treated was from 5 to 17 years).

Treatment with Cipro can only be prescribed after a careful assessment of the risk/benefit ratio due to the likelihood of side effects from the joints or periarticular tissues. Treatment of children in clinical trials was carried out only for the above indications. Clinical experience with ciprofloxacin in children for other indications is limited.
