Pharmacodynamics of the Drug

Synthroid is a synthetic laevoisomer of thyroxine. Being partially conversed to triiodothyronine (in the liver and kidneys) and transferred to the cells of the body, it affects the development of tissues and metabolism. In low doses, it has an anabolic effect on protein and fat metabolism. In medium doses, it stimulates growth and development, increases the need for tissues for oxygen, stimulates the metabolism of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, increases the functional activity of the cardiovascular system and the central nervous system.

In high doses, Synthroid inhibits the production of the thyrotropin-releasing hormone of the hypothalamus and thyroid-stimulating hormone of the pituitary gland. The therapeutic effect develops after 7-12 days; during the same time, the effect persists after the drug is discontinued. The clinical effect of hypothyroidism appears in 3-5 days. Diffuse goiter decreases or disappears within 3-6 months.

Synthroid Application

The daily dose of Synthroid is determined individually, depending on the indications. The whole pills are taken orally in the morning on an empty stomach for 30 minutes before meals, with a small amount of liquid (½ cup of water). Children under the age of 1 year take the daily dose of Synthroid at once within 30 minutes before the first feeding. The pill is dissolved in water until a suspension is formed immediately before taking the drug.

Newborns should start treatment with lower doses-12.5 mcg/day, gradually increasing to a maintenance dose every 2-4 weeks. Elderly patients with cardiovascular disease and severe long-term hypothyroidism should be treated with extreme caution with low doses-12.5 mcg/day. The dose is increased to maintenance at longer intervals — by 12.5 mcg/day every 2 weeks and more often determine the level of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in the blood plasma.

Synthroid is used throughout life for thyrotoxicosis, after surgery — strumectomy or thyroidectomy, as well as to prevent relapses after removal of euthyroid goiter. Complex therapy with thyrostatics is prescribed after reaching the euthyroid state. If there is a mild form of euthyroid goiter, then the duration of treatment is from 6 months to 2 years. If the condition does not improve after treatment, surgical treatment, or therapy with radioactive iodine is prescribed.

Side Effects

Adverse reactions were not observed in compliance with the recommendations for Synthroid use and control of clinical laboratory parameters, If there is the case of an overdose of the drug, especially with a rapid increase in the dose at the beginning of therapy, symptoms characteristic of thyrotoxicosis were noted: tachycardia, palpitations, arrhythmia, angina, headache, muscle weakness, spasms, fever, vomiting, menstrual irregularity, pseudotumor of the brain, tremor, anxiety, insomnia, increased sweating, weight loss, diarrhea.

Depending on the severity of symptoms, the doctor may recommend a reduction in the daily dose of the drug or a break in treatment for several days. After the disappearance of side effects, treatment should be prescribed with caution. If there is an increased sensitivity to Synthroid, allergic reactions may develop on the skin and on the part of the respiratory system.
